Omschrijving

Climate change is perhaps the greatest threat to human existence. We can no longer pretend that there is no problem. This is the opinion of visual artist Rob Chevallier, who uses his work to draw attention to the climate crisis and nature conservation. He uses recognizable objects, such as spirit levels, fruit bowls, stoves and medicine boxes. These sometimes nostalgic objects are given a different meaning by combining them with current photography. The photo objects become symbols of awareness.
The exhibition also includes part of the installation ‘The consequences of flying’. This project is being carried out simultaneously in Podium Mozaïek and in the Artifact Gallery in New York. The installation links the CO2 emissions from air travel to the compensation that is needed by planting trees. Visitors can give their opinion on air travel and climate change at both exhibitions.

The consequences of flying is an interactive installation about the relationship between flying, CO2 emissions and the way of compensating by planting trees. This project conains of two exbitions simultaneously in New York and Amsterdam

(1) The New York exhibition is in the Artifact Gallery, from 6-24 May, 2026 (Opening 7th may).
Here the whole installation will be displayed in a narrow corridor, so that visitors are forced to walk through it. Toy airplanes hang from the ceiling and airplane sounds can be heard. Photos of a number of European airports hang on the walls with statistical data on the number of flight movements per year, the CO2 emissions and the number of trees that must be planted as compensation for the CO2 emissions.

This installation is interactive: visitors are invited to give their view on the relationship between flying and CO2 emissions on a card. The presentation of these cards depends on the location; preferably hanging on wires from the airplanes, so that visitors have to find their way through their own text products.

For the first timce since 15 years I will be travelling by airplane. My personal emission of CO2 is 400 kilogram for the flight to New York an 400 kilogram on the return flight. This means that I have to plant one tree in New York, which has to stand for 40 years, to compensate my personal emission. For the return flight I have to plant one tree in Amsterdam.

(2) The exhibition in Amsterdam is in Podium Mozaïek form 27 april -28 juni 2026 (opening 28 april).
On this location, part of the project will be displayed. The installion itself will be displayed later on another location.

The scientific background and the necessary administrative steps to plant the trees are part of the project and will be recorded in a book. Here, the distinction between CO2 emissions, nitrogen emissions (NOx) and ultrafine particles, for aviation and airports, is also included, as well as solutions for future genarations.
